Research Claim Template: Evidence, Limits and Next Tests

Keep a claim connected to its assumptions, evidence and possible failure. Create a small record you can carry into a paper, notebook or interactive research map.

Build a claim record.

Create a readable text file or a JSON record on your device. Its fields are not submitted to ATO, and the tool does not save them between visits. Site-wide analytics may still operate. Download your notes before leaving.

One claim per record

A precise claim is easier to assess than a whole theory at once. State the object, the conditions and the proposed result. “The two listed relations have the same pair projections” can be checked. “Everything is connected” needs a more specific meaning before it becomes testable.

Keep the evidence category visible

  • Definition: a convention or meaning being introduced.
  • Demonstrated finite example: a result checked within an explicit, bounded domain.
  • Established result: a statement supported by an appropriate proof or reliable source.
  • Computational model: behavior of a stipulated implementation with stated assumptions.
  • Hypothesis: a proposed explanation or connection awaiting a discriminating test.
  • Creative interpretation: an artistic or fictional use of an idea.

A failure belongs in the record

Record the failed prediction, the conditions and what changed afterward. A revised hypothesis should preserve its ancestry instead of silently replacing the earlier statement. A negative result can prevent someone from repeating an attractive but unsupported inference.

From notes to a map

Use the claim as a node. Label each connection: depends on, contradicts, illustrates, shares a method with, or proposes an analogy to. A map becomes useful when a reader can inspect what a connection means and follow its source.
